The US embassy in Rome has confirmed that a unit from ICE will support the US Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service during the Milan-Cortina games, which commence on 6 February 2026. The president of Lombardy, Attilio Fontana, further fuelled concerns by noting that US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be accompanied by ICE “bodyguards” during the event.

Milan’s mayor, Giuseppe Sala, has been vocal in his opposition, asserting that ICE agents are not welcome in the city. He characterised the agency as “a militia that kills” and emphasised that Italy can manage its own security without external intervention. “Can’t we just say no to Trump for once?” Sala added, reflecting a broader sentiment among local leaders who are uncomfortable with foreign enforcement agencies on Italian soil.
Alessandro Zan, a member of the European Parliament from the centre-left Democratic Party, echoed these sentiments, labelling ICE’s presence as unacceptable. He highlighted concerns regarding human rights and accountability, stating, “In Italy, we don’t want those who trample on human rights and act outside of any democratic control.”
Opposition Parties Mobilise
In response to the controversy, two smaller opposition parties, the Green and Left Alliance (AVS) and Azione, have initiated petitions urging the Italian government and the Olympic organising committee to prevent ICE agents from entering the country and participating in security arrangements. The AVS articulated their position forcefully, asserting, “ICE is the militia that shoots people on the streets of Minneapolis and takes children away from their families.”
