Hundreds of eager Coventry City supporters descended on the city centre this morning, queuing for hours to get their hands on a limited-edition coral away shirt for just 1p. The overwhelming demand saw lines stretching around the block at both pop-up shops set up by the club and online bank Monzo.
At the city centre stand, wait times were estimated to exceed three hours by mid-morning as fans braved the cold to secure the bargain. Some joked on social media that they would still be in the queue by the time the Sky Blues’ match against Leicester City kicked off at midday.
The shirts were made available at two locations – the CBS Arena, Coventry City’s home ground, and Broadgate Square. Eager fans were lining up well before the Broadgate pop-up even opened, determined not to miss out on the incredible offer.
One Coventry supporter, Alice Cullinane, said the scenes were “unbelievable”, with the demand far exceeding expectations. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” she remarked. “People were queueing for hours just to get their hands on one of these shirts. It’s crazy how popular it’s been.”
The promotion was timed to coincide with Coventry’s match against Leicester City, giving fans the chance to show their colours at the game. However, the overwhelming response meant that many supporters were still waiting in line when the match kicked off.
Despite the lengthy queues, the club and Monzo appeared to have handled the situation well, with stewards on hand to keep the lines moving. Fans who managed to secure a shirt expressed their delight at the bargain, with many taking to social media to share their excitement.
The success of the promotion has certainly raised eyebrows, demonstrating the unwavering loyalty and passion of Coventry City’s supporters. It remains to be seen whether the club will look to repeat such an offer in the future, but one thing is for certain – Coventry fans will be ready and waiting.
