The final episode of this year’s “The Traitor” proved to be a nail-biting and bloodthirsty affair, with the cracks in the format starting to show but ultimately saved by a gripping endgame. The show’s central figure, Rachel, emerged as the undisputed star, her ruthless machinations casting a long shadow over the entire series.

While the mid-episode challenges continued to dampen the intrigue, and the reveal of the Secret Traitor came too early, the real standout of this season was the way Rachel managed to bend the show’s entire narrative around her. Her innate untrustworthiness kept viewers on the edge of their seats until the very end, as she repeatedly betrayed her supposed ally, Stephen, in their pursuit of the £95,750 prize.

The final five contestants – Jade, Faraaz, Jack, Stephen, and Rachel – were a mixed bag, with the more colourful personalities quickly eliminated in favour of the more passive and duplicitous players. Jade, in particular, was unfairly vilified throughout, while Faraaz’s sudden moments of perceptiveness only served to highlight his general muteness.

Ultimately, it was Rachel’s ruthless efficiency in dispatching the competition that proved to be the decisive factor. Poor Jade and Faraaz were unceremoniously banished, leaving the two traitors to gang up on the hapless Jack. In the end, Rachel and Stephen emerged victorious, splitting the prize money, while the other finalists were left feeling betrayed by the people they thought were their friends.

Despite the show’s flaws, the final 15 minutes made for a truly tense and sweaty watch. Watching Stephen agonize over how much he could trust Rachel was a spectacle akin to a man putting his head inside a crocodile’s mouth. While none of the finalists truly deserved the money, the sheer drama of the endgame managed to save the season.

As the dust settles, one can’t help but feel nostalgic for the more innocent celebrity version of “The Traitor,” where the contestants were more concerned with their reputations than becoming as debilitatingly bloodthirsty as this year’s batch. Nonetheless, the cunning and ruthless strategies on display have left an indelible mark on the show’s legacy.
