The streets of Minneapolis erupted in fresh protests and outrage this weekend after a federal immigration agent fatally shot a 37-year-old man during a confrontation with demonstrators. The incident, the second deadly shooting by federal agents in the city in just two weeks, has further inflamed tensions over the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement tactics.

The victim, identified as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, was an intensive care nurse and Minnesota resident who had participated in protests against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency’s operations in the state. Video footage from the scene appears to show several officers tackling Pretti as he was filming the confrontation, with at least 10 shots fired within seconds as they struggled with him on the ground.

The White House has claimed, without providing evidence, that Pretti was a “would-be assassin” who was attempting to murder federal agents. However, Minneapolis officials and Pretti’s family have disputed this characterisation, describing him as a concerned citizen who cared deeply about the treatment of immigrants.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and other state leaders have repeatedly urged the Trump administration to withdraw the federal agents deployed to the city, alleging that their presence has only served to “cause chaos and violence.” The administration, in turn, has accused state and local officials of obstructing the immigration enforcement operation and launched a criminal investigation into the governor and other Democrats.

The latest deadly incident follows the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent on January 7, which also sparked mass protests in Minneapolis. Federal immigration officers have now fired on people more than a dozen times since Trump’s return to the presidency, killing at least five and injuring at least seven others across the country.

As the tensions continue to escalate, Minnesota officials have vowed to maintain order while also pressing the administration to end what they describe as an unconstitutional and politically motivated “occupation” of the state. The Trump administration, however, appears intent on doubling down, with the president himself accusing Minnesota leaders of “insurrection” and demanding the return of billions in federal funds.

With no signs of the standoff easing, the tragic death of Alex Pretti has only further galvanised opposition to the administration’s hardline immigration agenda and raised urgent questions about the use of lethal force by federal agents against civilian protesters.
