A tragic landslide has struck a beloved campsite in Mount Maunganui on New Zealand’s North Island, leaving six people unaccounted for. The incident occurred after days of heavy rain pummeled the region, triggering the deadly disaster.
Among the missing are two teenagers, the youngest being just 15 years old. Police are also seeking information on three additional people who may have been at the site, believed to be international tourists who may have already departed the area.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon visited the affected communities on Friday, expressing his admiration for the outpouring of support and professionalism in the wake of the tragedy. “It’s inspiring to see the support pouring through the community, with neighbours and ‘friends of friends of friends’ helping to clear debris in flood-hit areas,” Luxon said.
However, significant challenges remain, with the Prime Minister highlighting issues such as road access to isolated communities and the continued risk of slips and flooding. Thunderstorms and strong winds are expected in the Gisborne and Tauranga regions this weekend, further exacerbating the difficult conditions.
Rescue efforts have been ongoing, with search teams and sniffer dogs combing through the devastation at the campsite. Tragically, no signs of life have been found under the rubble so far, according to district commander Tim Anderson. “We’re working 24/7 and leaving no stone unturned,” he said.
The landslide has also claimed the lives of a grandmother and her grandchild in the nearby Welcome Bay area, with one of the victims being a Chinese national. China’s ambassador to New Zealand, Wang Xiaolong, expressed his condolences, stating, “Our hearts are with the impacted families at this difficult moment.”
The search continues for a missing man who was swept away into the Mahurangi River north of Auckland on Wednesday. His wife remains hopeful, stating that her husband was an experienced swimmer and diver who had seen big waves before.
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this devastating natural disaster, the focus remains on the search and rescue efforts, with the community rallying together to support those affected by the tragic landslide.
