The platform’s updated settings will limit visibility and communication for users who haven’t confirmed their age. Only those who successfully pass the verification process will be permitted to access age-restricted communities and view sensitive content without restrictions. Additionally, users will not receive direct messages from unknown individuals unless they complete the required age checks.
Methods of Verification
To verify their age, users can choose between two methods: uploading a photo of their ID or taking a video selfie, which employs AI technology to estimate their facial age. Importantly, Discord has assured users that any data collected during the verification process will not be retained by the platform or the verification service. This commitment to privacy includes the deletion of ID uploads once the verification is complete, and a promise that facial scans will not be stored.
Despite these assurances, privacy advocates have raised concerns about the potential risks associated with such verification methods. The scrutiny surrounding age verification intensified following a data breach in October, where official ID photos of approximately 70,000 users were compromised due to a hack of a third-party verification partner.
