In a shocking turn of events, a former Conservative councillor has pleaded guilty to a string of serious sexual offences, including multiple counts of rape, against his now ex-wife over a 13-year period. Philip Young, 49, formerly of Swindon but now residing in Enfield, London, admitted to a litany of charges, including administering a substance with intent to stupefy and voyeurism.

The disturbing case came to light when Young was arrested in 2024, leading to his divorce from Joanne Young, 48, who has bravely waived her right to anonymity. During the proceedings at Winchester Crown Court, Young took just 27 minutes to enter his guilty pleas to the harrowing crimes, which occurred between 2010 and 2023.

Alongside the charges of rape, sexual assault, assault by penetration and voyeurism, Young also faced allegations of making and possessing indecent images of children, as well as possessing prohibited and extreme pornographic images. However, he was acquitted of these charges.

In a powerful statement, Detective Superintendent Geoff Smith of Wiltshire Police praised Joanne Young’s “incredible bravery” in coming forward, noting that today’s hearing marked a “significant landmark” in the case. The Crown Prosecution Service also commended its “thorough and compelling case” against the disgraced former councillor.

Four other men charged with sexual offences against Joanne Young also appeared in court, pleading not guilty to the charges. A fifth man will face trial at a later date for rape, assault by penetration and sexual assault.

This deeply disturbing case has sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond, highlighting the urgent need for greater awareness and action against domestic abuse and sexual violence. As Philip Young awaits sentencing, the focus now turns to ensuring justice is served and supporting Joanne Young and other survivors on their difficult journey to healing.
