In a shocking case that has rocked the local community, a former teacher at a South Belfast school has been found guilty of indecently assaulting five young girls during the 1970s. William Lloyd-Lavery, a 77-year-old retired history teacher, was convicted on six counts of indecent assault by a jury at Belfast Crown Court.

The disturbing incidents occurred over a four-year period between 1975 and 1979 when Lloyd-Lavery was employed at Richmond Lodge School. The court heard harrowing testimony from all six complainants, who described a range of inappropriate behaviour by the disgraced teacher. This included having their bottoms grabbed in the school corridors and being lifted up and touched on their genitals.

After nearly five hours of deliberation, the jury of six men and six women reached unanimous guilty verdicts on six counts of indecent assault. Lloyd-Lavery, dressed in a dark coat, shook his head as the verdicts were read out.

The judge has ordered pre-sentencing reports and informed Lloyd-Lavery that he is likely to face a custodial sentence. He will also be placed on the sex offenders register, with the duration to be determined at the sentencing hearing scheduled for 6 March.

This case has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised serious questions about the safeguarding measures in place at the time. Victims have bravely come forward years later to ensure justice is served, though the trauma of these incidents will undoubtedly linger.

As the sentencing approaches, there will be calls for a thorough review of the school’s historical handling of such allegations, to prevent similar abuses from occurring in the future. For now, the focus remains on ensuring the victims receive the support they need and that the perpetrator is held fully accountable for his deplorable actions.
