In a shocking turn of events, a doctor has been accused of sexually assaulting dozens of patients at two prominent hospitals in the West Midlands region. Nathaniel Spencer, a 38-year-old former resident doctor, is facing over 40 counts of sexual assault and related charges involving 38 patients at the Royal Stoke University Hospital and Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley between 2017 and 2021.

The charges, which were heard at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre on Tuesday, include 15 counts of sexual assault, 17 counts of assault by penetration, nine counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, and three counts of assaulting a child under 13 by penetration. One count of attempted assault by penetration has also been brought against the accused.

Appearing in court wearing a grey suit and white shirt, Spencer spoke only to confirm his address and date of birth during the brief hearing presided over by District Judge Joseph O’Connor. The doctor was released on conditional bail and is scheduled to appear at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on 20 February.

Notably, some of the patients over whom Spencer is accused were under the age of 13 at the time of the alleged offences. This has added to the gravity of the situation and the potential long-term impact on the victims.

Spencer’s alleged crimes occurred during his time as a former resident doctor, previously known as a junior doctor, at the University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust between August 2017 and August 2020. He later worked as a resident doctor on a placement at The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust from August 2020 to April 2021.

The news of these disturbing allegations has sent shockwaves through the local community and the wider healthcare system. Patients and their families will undoubtedly be deeply concerned and will be seeking answers and assurances from the authorities.

The case is now set to proceed to the Crown Court, where a more comprehensive investigation and judicial process will take place. It is crucial that the allegations are thoroughly examined, and that any victims receive the necessary support and justice they deserve.
