A concerning health alert has emerged as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified Raw Farm, a prominent California dairy, as a probable source of an E. coli outbreak associated with its cheddar cheese. This alarming incident has resulted in nine confirmed cases of illness across three states, with more than half of those affected being children under the age of five. The outbreak has raised significant public health concerns, particularly given the severity of the E. coli strain involved and the history of foodborne illness linked to the farm.

Details of the Outbreak

The FDA’s investigation reveals that between September 2025 and February 2026, a dangerous strain of E. coli, known as O157:H7, has sickened several individuals, leading to three hospitalisations. Notably, one case has developed into hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious condition that can result in kidney failure. The geographical spread includes seven cases in California, alongside single cases reported in Florida and Texas.

In light of these findings, Raw Farm has been under scrutiny as the largest producer of raw milk in the United States. The FDA’s recent alert has classified the farm as a “likely source” of the outbreak, prompting ongoing investigations into the safety of their products.

Historical Context

This latest incident is not the first time Raw Farm has been implicated in a health crisis. In December 2024, the farm was linked to an outbreak of H5N1 bird flu that led to the deaths of two cats in the Los Angeles area, who had consumed the farm’s raw milk. This raised alarm bells regarding the potential for animal-to-human transmission of avian viruses. Additionally, Raw Farm was associated with a significant salmonella outbreak in 2024, which affected at least 165 individuals, marking it as one of the largest such incidents in over a decade.

Response from Raw Farm

In light of the current outbreak, Aaron McAfee, president of Raw Farm, has stated that he does not intend to initiate a voluntary recall of any of his products unless there is direct evidence linking them to the illnesses. He noted that, to date, none of Raw Farm’s products have tested positive for E. coli, and the FDA has not mandated a recall. However, the FDA has recommended that the farm withdraw its cheese products from shelves as a precautionary measure.

“We’ve sampled 81 products purchased from retail stores in California, and all results were negative,” McAfee asserted. “If I had any concern, I would have issued a voluntary recall.” Meanwhile, the FDA continues its investigation, conducting on-site inspections to ascertain the source and extent of the contamination.

Consumer Advisory

In a separate advisory, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has urged consumers to consider refraining from consuming Raw Farm’s cheese while the investigation proceeds. They also recommend thorough cleaning of any utensils and surfaces that may have come into contact with the cheese to mitigate potential risks.

Why it Matters

The implications of this outbreak extend beyond the immediate health concerns of those directly affected. It highlights critical issues surrounding food safety, particularly in the raw dairy sector. With children being disproportionately impacted, it raises alarms about regulatory oversight and the measures in place to protect vulnerable populations. As investigations continue, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of rigorous food safety protocols to prevent similar outbreaks in the future, ensuring that consumers can trust the food products they purchase.
