A recent E. coli outbreak in the United States has been traced back to Raw Farm, a dairy producer in California, sparking concerns about food safety, particularly among vulnerable populations. The outbreak has already affected nine individuals across three states, predominantly children under the age of five, leading to hospitalisations and a serious health condition known as hemolytic uremic syndrome.
E. Coli Cases and Investigations
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified Raw Farm as a “likely source” of the outbreak following an analysis of genetic similarities in bacterial samples collected from the affected individuals. Between September 2025 and February 2026, seven cases were reported in California, with additional cases in Florida and Texas. Among those infected, three people have required hospitalisation, raising alarms about the severity of the strain involved—E. coli O157:H7.
This is not Raw Farm’s first encounter with foodborne illness. The dairy was previously implicated in a 2024 bird flu outbreak that resulted in the deaths of two cats in Los Angeles after consuming the farm’s raw milk. The farm has also been connected to the largest salmonella outbreak in over a decade, which affected at least 165 people in the same year.
Raw Farm’s Response to the Outbreak
Aaron McAfee, president of Raw Farm, has publicly stated that he will not initiate a voluntary recall of his products unless there is “direct proof” linking them to the illnesses. Despite the ongoing investigation, no products from Raw Farm have tested positive for E. coli, and the FDA has yet to issue a mandatory recall. However, the agency has recommended that Raw Farm voluntarily remove its cheese products from retail shelves.
“We’ve sampled 81 products purchased from stores in California, and all results were negative,” McAfee told NBC News. He emphasised that if he had any concerns about the safety of his products, he would proactively issue a recall. The FDA’s investigation continues, and an on-site inspection of the farm has been initiated as part of the effort to understand the outbreak’s origins.
Consumer Guidance and Precautions
In light of the ongoing investigation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised consumers to avoid eating the implicated cheese products until further notice. They also recommend thoroughly washing any surfaces or utensils that may have come into contact with the cheese, including cutting boards and knives, to mitigate the risk of cross-contamination.
