As families prepare to gather for Easter celebrations, many are bracing for a sharp increase in the cost of traditional lamb dishes. A recent report highlights that British households regularly purchasing lamb have faced an additional £168 in expenses over the past three years, primarily due to the effects of climate change.

The Rising Cost of Lamb

According to the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), the price of a typical 2kg leg of lamb has surged significantly since 2022. This increase, driven by extreme weather events such as droughts, intense heat, and heavy rainfall, has caused prices to rise between 7% and 21% over the past few years. Chris Jaccarini, a land, food, and farming analyst at the ECIU, emphasised the direct correlation between these climatic shocks and the rising costs faced by consumers.

“As families and communities sit down to celebrate this Easter, the cost of climate change is hitting home,” Jaccarini remarked. He noted that the adverse weather has severely impacted farmers’ production costs, hampering grass growth and depleting hay stores.

The Impact of Extreme Weather

The ECIU’s analysis, conducted by Zero Carbon Analytics and based on data from the Met Office, reveals that the severe drought of 2022 alone increased lamb prices by 11%. Following that, the record rainfall experienced from October 2023 to March 2024 accounted for a staggering 25% surge in prices, while the recent drought contributed an additional 13%. These figures translate to an average increase of £5 (17.5%) in the price of lamb roasts this Easter, escalating to £7 (21%) the following year.

Jack Cockburn, a sheep farmer from Ceredigion, Wales, shared his own struggles with the ongoing climate crisis. “Here in West Wales, extreme weather is our biggest challenge,” he explained. “We’ve had two very wet winters in a row, which has meant poor grass growth due to waterlogged soils and low light levels with the very cloudy conditions.” The resulting lower weights of lambs sent to slaughter have further compounded the issue, affecting overall meat yields.

A Broader Impact on Food Prices

Lamb is not the only food item feeling the strain of climatic upheaval. The cost of Easter eggs has skyrocketed as well, with prices climbing by two-thirds over the past three years. Factors such as heavy rainfall, droughts, and humid heatwaves have adversely affected cocoa production in West Africa, leading to further inflation. Recent grocery inflation figures from Worldpanel by Numerator indicate that the average price of an Easter egg has risen by 9% since last year, now costing approximately £3.27.

Why it Matters

The rising cost of lamb and other Easter treats serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing impact of climate change on everyday life. As weather extremes become increasingly common, the affordability of essential goods is jeopardised, affecting families across the UK. This situation calls for urgent attention to bolster agricultural resilience and accelerate the transition to a net-zero economy. Without immediate action, the financial burden on consumers is likely to deepen, raising questions about the sustainability of our food systems in the face of an uncertain climate future.
