In a significant outcry against environmental policy changes, over 160 public health and environmental organisations have united in calling for the resignation or dismissal of Lee Zeldin, the current administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The coalition accuses Zeldin of fundamentally undermining the agency’s mission to protect public health and the environment, stating that his leadership has jeopardised decades of progress.

A Brazen Betrayal of Public Trust

In an open letter released on Tuesday, the coalition highlighted that no previous EPA administrator, regardless of political affiliation, has so blatantly deviated from the agency’s core responsibilities. “The EPA’s foremost purpose is to protect human health and the environment,” the letter asserted. “Under Zeldin’s direction, the agency has forsaken its mission, leading to destruction that will take years, if not decades, to rectify.”

Zeldin has been accused of systematically dismantling key environmental safeguards designed to combat climate change, ensure clean air and water, and protect the health of American citizens. The letter emphasised that critical funding has been slashed, staff levels reduced, and the regulatory framework manipulated in favour of corporate polluters, thus prioritising profits over public health.

A Unified Front Against Environmental Neglect

The letter, which was organised by the Climate Action Campaign and Moms Clean Air Force, received endorsements from a range of groups including Public Citizen, Sierra Club, Earthjustice, GreenRoots, and Physicians for Social Responsibility. Gretchen Goldman, president of the Union of Concerned Scientists, stated, “The public deserves an EPA administrator who will confront the climate crisis and toxic pollution with proven policy solutions, not one who serves as an agent of destruction aligned with the interests of the fossil fuel and chemical industries.”

This call for Zeldin’s resignation follows a January petition from the Make America Healthy Again movement, led by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which similarly condemned his environmental rollbacks. Reports have indicated that Zeldin has engaged with supporters of this movement, further entrenching suspicions about his alignment with corporate interests over public wellbeing.

Internal Dissent and External Criticism

Zeldin’s tenure has not only drawn ire from advocacy groups but has also sparked significant dissent among current and former EPA staff. In June, a group of employees signed a “Declaration of Dissent” criticising Zeldin’s management and the impact of his policies on scientific programming. Some of these staff members faced suspension or termination for their stance, although an internal review concluded that their actions did not breach ethical regulations.

EPA spokesperson Brigit Hirsch defended Zeldin’s leadership, asserting that the agency maintains a strict policy against undermining the administration’s agenda. “We have a zero-tolerance policy for career bureaucrats unlawfully undermining, sabotaging, and undercutting the administration’s agenda,” she stated, reflecting the administration’s commitment to its controversial policy direction.

Zeldin’s Upcoming Engagements Raise Eyebrows

Next month, Zeldin is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at a climate conference hosted by the Heartland Institute, a right-wing organisation known for its rejection of the scientific consensus on climate change. The institute has received significant funding from corporations like ExxonMobil and prominent Republican donors, further fuelling concerns about Zeldin’s alignment with corporate interests over environmental protection.

The ongoing debate around Zeldin’s leadership is emblematic of a broader struggle within US environmental policy, where the tension between industry interests and public health remains at the forefront.

Why it Matters

The demand for Lee Zeldin’s resignation underscores a pivotal moment in US environmental policy, as grassroots organisations rally against an administration perceived to be prioritising corporate profits over public health. The implications of Zeldin’s leadership extend beyond the EPA, influencing climate action efforts nationwide and shaping the future of environmental protections in the United States. This growing coalition of advocacy groups signals a renewed commitment to holding leaders accountable, ensuring that the fight for a sustainable and healthy environment remains at the forefront of political discourse.
