Iranian cities are reeling from a wave of airstrikes orchestrated by Israel and the United States, leaving citizens grappling with sleepless nights and disrupted lives. The bombardments, which have continued for over a week, have resulted in power outages and widespread fear, particularly in Tehran and the nearby city of Karaj. Residents describe a relentless atmosphere of anxiety as explosions echo through the skies, with many voicing their desperation for peace and stability.

A City Under Siege

Residents of Tehran have been enduring a harrowing reality with explosions occurring “every few hours,” as described by one local in his twenties. “I just want to be able to sleep tonight,” he lamented, highlighting the emotional toll the conflict has taken. The Israeli military, in a statement released on Monday evening, confirmed the initiation of a comprehensive offensive targeting what they termed “terrorist installations” in the Iranian capital. This escalation follows a joint military action by the US and Israel, which began on 28 February.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) reported focusing their strikes on critical infrastructure linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, aiming to cripple their capabilities in weapons research and production. As the strikes intensified, residents reported experiencing not only power outages but also peculiar fluctuations in electricity, contributing to a sense of disarray. One man recounted, “The electricity went out, and I had no idea what was happening,” as he confronted the darkness and uncertainty that enveloped his home.

Human Cost of Conflict

The human toll of the ongoing conflict has been staggering. The US-based organisation Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRANA) reported that since the onset of hostilities, at least 1,761 individuals have lost their lives, with a significant proportion being civilians, including 194 children. The chaotic environment has made it increasingly difficult for journalists to verify these figures independently, as access to Iran remains severely restricted.

Human Cost of Conflict

Accounts from Tehran’s residents reveal not only physical damage to their homes but also psychological scars. One woman in her twenties reflected on the surreal nature of her surroundings, describing “strange white lights” illuminating the night sky amidst the chaos. “Even if it takes a few weeks now, it’s still better than spending a lifetime living with this system,” she expressed, embodying the sentiments of many who are seeking a change in their governance despite the dire circumstances.

Resilience Amidst Adversity

Despite the overwhelming challenges they face, many Iranians remain resolute in their desire for a better future. A mother from Karaj, where strikes also occurred, expressed a defiant hope: “We are standing firm until the end to survive and to be free,” she said, underscoring the determination of those who have already sacrificed much. However, not all voices echo such optimism. Others articulate their exhaustion and fear, with one young man from Karaj stating, “The whole war is overwhelming. Some scenarios for the future are truly frightening.”

The echoes of past protests linger heavily in the air. One young man from Tehran, who suffered injury during anti-government demonstrations in late 2022, spoke of the compounded suffering: “We are the victims. I have been harmed by the Islamic Republic, and because of it a war is now happening that is harming us again.” His words reflect a deep sense of betrayal among those who hoped for change, only to find themselves entangled in further conflict.

Why it Matters

The current situation in Iran serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance of power in the Middle East and the profound human cost of geopolitical strife. As the conflict unfolds, the resilience of the Iranian people shines through, but so too does the stark reality of their suffering. The international community must take heed of these developments, recognising the urgent need for dialogue and resolution to prevent further loss of life and to foster a lasting peace in a region long plagued by turmoil.
