Vincent Chan, 45, confessed to filming himself abusing children during nap times at the Bright Horizons nursery located on Finchley Road, West Hampstead, and has acknowledged possessing a vast collection of indecent images of children.

The alarming revelations have prompted 46 families to pursue legal accountability from Bright Horizons, asserting that the nursery repeatedly ignored their concerns regarding Chan’s behaviour. Vincent Chan, who previously worked at the nursery from 2017 to 2024, pleaded guilty in December to 26 charges, including sexual assault by penetration and the creation of indecent images of the most severe nature involving child sexual abuse. On Thursday, he admitted to an additional 30 charges, which include voyeurism and taking indecent photographs of multiple victims. He is due to be sentenced on 12 February.

Chan’s suspension came after a colleague raised alarms about his inappropriate conduct. The whistleblower reported that Chan had filmed a child falling asleep and edited the footage with music, which was deemed unacceptable. An investigation by the Metropolitan Police subsequently revealed that Chan had amassed over 25,000 indecent images of children.
The families involved in the legal action include both parents of direct victims and those whose children were subjected to other forms of mistreatment by Chan, such as humiliating videos. In a statement from Leigh Day, the law firm representing the families, they expressed concerns that Chan’s actions reflect serious flaws in the recruitment and monitoring processes of childcare providers. They stated, “What has happened here is not just about one individual or one nursery.”

Bright Horizons has stated that it takes parent feedback seriously and is committed to learning from this tragic situation. A spokesperson remarked that the abuse was an “appalling breach of trust” by Chan and does not represent the dedication of the many staff members who work diligently to care for children. The nursery has pledged full cooperation with the ongoing Child Safeguarding Practice Review (CSPR) and encouraged parents to engage in the process.
