As the flu season hits the UK earlier than usual, England’s emergency departments are facing an unprecedented surge in patients, leaving hospitals struggling to cope. At Leicester Royal Infirmary, one of the country’s busiest A&E units, the situation has become increasingly dire.
The hospital is seeing a record number of flu cases, with over 1,000 patients passing through its doors on some days last winter. This year, attendance levels are already around 8% higher than the same period in 2022, and the unit is facing a daily shortage of 50 to 70 beds.
The influx of patients, many of whom are suffering from a more severe strain of the flu virus, is putting immense pressure on the hospital’s resources. Consultant Saad Jawaid describes a scene of constant activity, with patients in every cubicle and ambulances arriving one after the other.
“There are patients in every cubicle,” Jawaid says. “Another ambulance has just rocked up.”
The situation is particularly challenging for vulnerable patients, such as 19-year-old Paige, who has type 1 diabetes and arrived at the hospital with dangerously high sugar levels on top of the flu. Doctors and nurses work tirelessly to stabilize her condition and find the desperately needed bed space.
Across the country, hospitals are facing an unprecedented flu season, with the number of flu patients hitting a record high for this time of year. NHS leaders have warned that the system is under immense strain, and the situation is only expected to worsen in the coming weeks.
At Leicester Royal Infirmary, the hospital has implemented new measures to manage the influx of patients, including a triage system at the entrance to ensure those in greatest need receive urgent care. However, staff admit that they are working at the limits of their ability, and that wait times and delays are likely to only get worse.
“We will not be able to provide timely care to every patient this winter,” says Richard Mitchell, the chief executive of University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust. “But we will continue to do our utmost to ensure that patients are treated with dignity and respect and receive safe care.”
As the flu season continues to take its toll, hospitals across England are bracing for a challenging winter ahead, with staff and patients alike warning that the system is close to breaking point.
