New Brunswick’s police oversight body has announced that a former Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer is now facing seven more charges linked to child exploitation. The new allegations come following an ongoing investigation into his previous conduct, which initially saw him charged in June 2024 for orchestrating a sexual crime against a minor under the age of 16.

Additional Charges Unveiled

Corporal Jeremy Bastarache, who was suspended with pay at the time of his initial charges, officially retired in June 2025. The independent Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) revealed on Friday that the investigation has uncovered further Criminal Code offences, significantly expanding the scope of the case against him.

The fresh charges include yet another count of arranging a sexual offence against a child under 16, as well as arranging similar offences involving minors under 18. In addition, Bastarache faces charges for possession and production of child pornography, and for recruiting individuals under 18 for sexual services in exchange for money. His alleged actions also include communicating with the intent of obtaining sexual services from underage individuals and trafficking minors.

Investigation Details

These additional charges stem from a thorough investigation conducted by the RCMP’s child exploitation unit, which employed digital forensic services to uncover evidence against Bastarache. The SIRT’s statement emphasised the seriousness of these allegations and the commitment to ensuring accountability in cases involving the exploitation of vulnerable individuals.

This latest development raises critical questions about the integrity of law enforcement personnel and their role in protecting communities, particularly the safety of children. The implications of such charges against a former member of the RCMP are profound, stirring public concern and demanding transparency in the police oversight process.

Community Response

The community’s reaction to these revelations has been one of shock and disappointment. Many residents have expressed their trust in law enforcement, which is now being called into question by the nature of these charges. Advocacy groups focused on child protection have also weighed in, urging for more stringent measures to prevent such abuses by those sworn to serve and protect.

The seriousness of these allegations has ignited discussions around the need for reform within policing bodies, with calls for comprehensive reviews of current practices regarding misconduct and child protection protocols.

Why it Matters

The unfolding case against Jeremy Bastarache is not just about one individual; it underscores a broader issue within law enforcement concerning accountability and the safeguarding of vulnerable populations. As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring justice for victims and restoring public confidence in the integrity of police forces. The community must grapple with the implications of these charges, as they highlight the urgent need for systemic change to better protect children from exploitation and abuse.
