A former Tory councillor has pleaded guilty to a litany of disturbing charges, including drugging, raping, and sexually assaulting his wife over a 13-year period. Philip Young, 49, from Enfield, admitted to 48 out of 56 charges against him, including 14 counts of voyeurism, 11 counts of rape, and 11 counts of administering substances with the intent to stupefy his then-wife, Joanne Young.
The abuse took place between 2010 and 2023, and Young also published more than 500 intimate images and videos of his ex-wife without her consent. Mrs Young, 48, who previously waived her right to anonymity, sat in the court to witness her former husband’s guilty plea, supported by her sister and a member of witness support.
In a statement, Wiltshire Police Detective Superintendent Geoff Smith praised Mrs Young’s “incredible bravery” throughout the ordeal, saying that the hearing was a “significant landmark” that saw Philip Young admit to dozens of serious sexual offences against his wife.
Five other men have also been charged with sexual offences against Mrs Young and are due to stand trial on October 5. Police are also seeking to identify another suspect in connection with the case, described as a large-built man with scarring on the back of his head and a distinctive tattoo on his chest.
This disturbing case has sent shockwaves through the community and serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of addressing domestic abuse and ensuring the safety and well-being of victims. The courage displayed by Mrs Young in coming forward and pursuing justice is truly commendable and may inspire others in similar situations to seek help and support.
