In a thrilling development for fans of the Game of Thrones universe, the highly anticipated prequel series “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is set to make its debut, with Northern Ireland serving as the primary filming location. Unlike its predecessor, House of the Dragon, which was shot in England, this new series will embrace the stunning landscapes and rich history that have long been associated with the original Game of Thrones franchise.

The series, based on George R.R. Martin’s three novellas, tells the story of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, set approximately a century before the events of Game of Thrones. The decision to film in Northern Ireland was a strategic one, as Robert Dowling, who runs Game of Thrones tours in the region, explains: “This particular Westeros story could only be filmed in Northern Ireland.”

The filming locations for “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” include a diverse array of iconic Northern Irish landmarks, such as Glenarm Castle in County Antrim, Myra Castle in County Down, Tollymore Forest Park, and the Hidden Village of Galboly in the Glens of Antrim, among others. These picturesque settings are expected to provide a breathtaking backdrop for the series, echoing the visual splendor that captivated audiences in the original Game of Thrones.

Richard Williams, the head of NI Screen, expressed the region’s delight at welcoming the prequel series back to its shores. “We always knew that we had this ongoing relationship with HBO – our biggest ever customer – and the touchstone of quality global TV drama, so we were absolutely ecstatic to have it back,” he said.

The return of the Game of Thrones franchise to Northern Ireland is not only a boon for the local film industry but also a boost for tourism. Adrian Hanna, who worked as an extra on both the original series and the new prequel, noted the excitement among the crew at the prospect of reuniting. “You see the same faces, the sound people and the props people and makeup, they’re all the same, they’re all lovely,” he said.

As anticipation builds for the premiere of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” fans can look forward to a captivating journey through the rich tapestry of the Westeros universe, with Northern Ireland’s stunning landscapes serving as the perfect backdrop for this new chapter in the beloved franchise.
