As the war in Ukraine approaches its fourth anniversary, a new report unveils staggering figures that shed light on the human cost of the ongoing conflict. Nearly two million military personnel from both sides may have been killed, injured, or gone missing since the onset of hostilities, with Russian forces bearing the brunt of the losses. The findings, released by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, highlight the grim reality of a war that has become a protracted and bloody ordeal.

A War of Attrition

The report estimates that the Russian military has sustained approximately 1.2 million casualties between February 2022 and December 2025, of which around 325,000 are believed to be troop fatalities. This staggering loss makes it the highest number of military casualties recorded for any major power in a conflict since World War II. “No major power has suffered anywhere near these numbers of casualties or fatalities in any war since World War II,” the authors of the study noted.

In stark contrast, Ukraine, with its smaller military force and population, is estimated to have faced between 500,000 to 600,000 military casualties, including as many as 140,000 deaths. These figures, however, have been dismissed as unreliable by Russian officials, who argue that the ongoing war remains a grinding battle of attrition. Analysts suggest that despite the significant losses, Russian President Vladimir Putin appears unwilling to seek a diplomatic resolution, stubbornly pursuing military objectives along the extensive 1,000-kilometre front line.

Unyielding Russian Ambitions

Despite the mounting toll, Putin has reiterated his commitment to seizing control of the Donbas region in Ukraine, which his forces currently control 90 per cent of. He has made it clear that he will pursue this goal through military means unless Ukraine concedes in a peace agreement. This weekend, negotiations brokered by the United States are set to take place, aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict. US Senator Marco Rubio stated that efforts are underway to resolve the territorial disputes surrounding Donetsk, a key sticking point in the negotiations.

“It’s still a bridge we have to cross. It’s still a gap, but at least we’ve been able to narrow down the issue set to one central one, and it will probably be a very difficult one,” Rubio remarked during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, underscoring the complexities facing both sides.

Civilian Casualties and Infrastructure Damage

The toll of this conflict extends beyond the military, as civilian casualties continue to rise amidst relentless strikes. On Wednesday, Russian assaults near Kyiv resulted in the deaths of a couple, while the southern city of Odesa faced heavy bombardment. This came just a day after a drone strike claimed five lives on a passenger train. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned these attacks, emphasising the indiscriminate nature of the violence. “The strike hit a residential neighbourhood, with no military targets anywhere nearby,” he asserted, vowing that Ukraine would respond decisively.

The ongoing conflict has wreaked havoc on infrastructure, with attacks targeting energy facilities and urban areas. Despite the harsh winter, hundreds of thousands of residents remain without power, a direct consequence of the relentless assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The Black Sea port of Pivdennyi was also targeted, leading to damage while operations continued, according to local officials.

A Humanitarian Crisis

As the violence escalates, the humanitarian implications grow more dire. The conflict has resulted in widespread displacement, destruction of homes, and a growing number of families torn apart. Emergency services continue to battle fires ignited by strikes, highlighting the urgent need for aid and support for those caught in the crossfire.

Why it Matters

The staggering military and civilian casualties reported in this ongoing conflict underscore the urgent need for a resolution. As the war drags on, the human cost continues to rise, placing immense strain on both nations and fuelling a humanitarian crisis that requires immediate attention. The international community must grapple with the moral and strategic implications of a conflict that has already claimed so many lives, while the spectre of further escalation looms ominously on the horizon.
