A coalition of prominent gun control advocates is expressing deep concern over the lack of transparency from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) regarding the firearms involved in the tragic Tumbler Ridge school shooting. In an open letter addressed to RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme, the group, which includes representatives from organisations such as PolySeSouvient and Angie’s Angels, is urging the RCMP to provide crucial information that could help inform discussions about gun legislation in Canada.

Call for Transparency

The shooting, which occurred on February 10, saw 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar kill her mother and 11-year-old half-brother at their family home before proceeding to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where she shot five students and an education assistant. The incident, one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canadian history, has left the community and the nation grappling with grief and anger.

In their letter, the advocates stressed the importance of understanding the types of firearms used in the shooting, stating that Canadians have a right to know. “Releasing verified information now about the models of firearms used may well help prevent more mass shootings and gun violence in communities across Canada,” the letter reads. The group believes that transparency in this matter could facilitate a more informed public debate on potential changes to gun laws.

Limited Information from Authorities

Since the tragedy, the RCMP has provided scant details about the firearms involved. It has been confirmed that four weapons were used: two at the shooter’s home, including an unregistered shotgun, and two at the school. While some guns had previously been seized from the shooter’s residence, the RCMP has not elaborated on this matter, leaving families and advocates frustrated.

The Globe and Mail has joined a consortium of media outlets in a legal battle to gain access to records relating to the Tumbler Ridge shooting, including information on the firearms. However, the RCMP has remained tight-lipped, citing an active investigation as the reason for withholding information. In a recent communication, the force stated that it is unable to provide a timeline for when more details might become available.

The Importance of Verified Information

Heidi Rathjen, the lead organiser of PolySeSouvient and one of the signatories of the open letter, articulated the necessity of having clear information about the weapons used. “If we don’t know how a perpetrator of a mass shooting got access to the weapons they used, then how are we supposed to change our laws to prevent the next mass shooting?” she questioned in an interview.

The public is keenly aware of the implications that the type and accessibility of firearms have on such tragic events. A retired RCMP officer, Frank Grosspietsch, has identified firearms found in a social media post by the shooter’s mother, which included a KRISS Vector semi-automatic rifle—a model that has since been classified as prohibited. Understanding whether such firearms were involved in the school attack is essential for evaluating the effectiveness of current gun control measures.

Why it Matters

The Tumbler Ridge massacre has reignited discussions about gun control in Canada, underscoring the urgent need for clarity and accountability from law enforcement. As the nation mourns, the demand for transparency regarding the weapons used in this tragic event holds significant weight. It not only impacts ongoing debates about legislation but also serves as a critical point for ensuring that communities can engage in meaningful discussions about preventing future tragedies. Without verified information, the public is left in the dark, unable to advocate effectively for necessary changes to gun laws that could save lives.
