The Hockey Hall of Fame has announced that the pucks used in the gold medal-winning goals for both the men’s and women’s teams during the Milan Cortina Olympics have been officially added to its permanent collection. This significant donation comes from the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and marks a pivotal moment in the preservation of Olympic hockey history.
A Golden Keepsake for Future Generations
On Wednesday, the Hall revealed details about these iconic artifacts, coinciding with remarks from Jack Hughes, who netted the golden goal for the U.S. men’s team in overtime. Hughes expressed a desire to keep the puck as a cherished memento to present to his father, Jim. In a statement to the Associated Press, the Hall emphasised the importance of these pieces, noting, “These artifacts are preserved, exhibited, and shared with fans worldwide through our museum and international outreach programmes, ensuring that defining Olympic and World Championship moments remain protected and accessible to the global hockey community.”
The U.S. hockey teams made history by sweeping the gold medals in men’s, women’s, and Paralympic sled hockey, triumphing over Canada in each final. Megan Keller’s overtime goal for the women’s team has also earned its place in the Hall, alongside Hughes’ puck.
Celebrating Hockey History
Jamie Dinsmore, President and CEO of the Hockey Hall of Fame, remarked on the significance of these donations, stating, “These donated items represent defining moments on the world’s biggest stage and carry powerful stories of national pride and hockey history at its highest level.” He also highlighted the upcoming Olympic display for 2026, which will showcase these unforgettable moments for visitors from around the globe.

This collection includes over 70 items, featuring notable memorabilia such as sticks from American player Brady Tkachuk and gloves from teammate Jack Eichel, as well as jerseys worn by Canada’s captain, Sidney Crosby, and Sweden’s William Nylander.
A Legacy of Commemoration
Since the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, the IIHF has consistently provided the Hockey Hall of Fame with official pucks and other historical artifacts that commemorate key moments from Olympic hockey tournaments. This includes the famed puck from Sidney Crosby’s ‘Golden Goal’ in 2010 and Natalie Darwitz’s puck from her Gold Medal-winning goal at the 2008 World Championships. The Hall is dedicated to the mission of collecting, preserving, researching, exhibiting, and promoting items that are significant to hockey’s rich legacy.
Why it Matters
The inclusion of these pucks in the Hockey Hall of Fame not only honours the athletes who have left an indelible mark on the sport but also serves as a reminder of the cultural significance of hockey within the international sporting community. By preserving these moments, the Hall ensures that future generations will have the opportunity to connect with the achievements of their heroes, fostering a deeper appreciation for the game and its storied history.
