In a profound loss for the fashion industry, the legendary Italian designer Valentino Garavani, known simply as Valentino, has died at the age of 93. Valentino, one of the giants of 20th-century fashion, was renowned for his opulent and luxurious creations that adorned the frames of countless celebrities and influential figures.

The Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation announced the designer’s passing, stating that he “passed away peacefully in his Roman home, surrounded by the love of his family.” The foundation also revealed that Valentino will lie in state at Piazza Mignanelli in Rome between January 21 and 22, with his funeral service to be held the following day at the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and Martyrs.

Born in Lombardy, Italy, in May 1932, Valentino’s journey in the fashion world began at the young age of 17 when he moved to Paris to study at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. He went on to work with renowned designers such as Jacques Fath, Balenciaga, Jean Desses, and Guy Laroche, honing his skills and developing his distinctive style.

Valentino’s creations were synonymous with luxury, wealth, and opulence, often featuring broad shoulder padding and his iconic “Valentino red,” a shade he discovered on a trip to Spain. This vibrant hue became so intrinsic to the Valentino brand that for his final collection in 2007, all the models wore red dresses for the finale.

The designer’s impact on the fashion industry was undeniable, and his work was celebrated by a wide range of celebrities and well-known figures, including Elizabeth Taylor, Nancy Reagan, Sharon Stone, Julia Roberts, and Gwyneth Paltrow. In December 2023, Valentino was honoured with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the British Fashion Awards, held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, cementing his legacy as a true master of his craft.

Valentino’s passing marks the end of an era in the world of fashion, as the industry mourns the loss of one of its most revered and influential figures. His timeless designs and unwavering dedication to his craft have left an indelible mark on the fashion landscape, and his legacy will continue to inspire and captivate generations to come.
