In a disappointing turn of events, the award-winning restaurant The Ollerod in Beaminster, Dorset, has announced its closure, citing the relentless rise in costs and overheads. The establishment, which launched in 2018, will cease operations as a full-service restaurant from March 1st, though it will continue to operate as a “bed and bar” business, as owner Silvana Bandini explained was the “only feasible option”.
Bandini, visibly disheartened by the decision, pointed to the multiple factors that have left the hospitality industry “on its knees”. Skyrocketing utility bills, soaring food prices, and increased staff costs – including the hike in minimum wage – have all taken a heavy toll. “Everybody knows that we have been absolutely slammed, not just my industry but the whole country, with wages and National Insurance,” she lamented.
The situation has been further exacerbated by the lack of energy price caps for commercial customers, with Bandini reporting that the cost of gas and electricity has tripled, rendering the business “not viable”. Ian Girling, the chief executive of the Dorset Chamber of Commerce, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the “heavy burden” faced by the sector due to rising staff costs, recruitment challenges, food expenses, and increased National Insurance and business rates.
The government, while acknowledging the challenges, has maintained that its efforts to grow the economy and create good jobs will provide stability and help combat inflation. However, the closure of The Ollerod serves as a stark reminder of the pressing issues facing the hospitality industry.
In a bid to alleviate the strain, Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds recently unveiled plans for a Food Inflation Gateway, which will assess the impact of government regulations on food businesses and their effect on prices. The industry will also be able to apply for the suspension of import tariffs to protect the costs of key ingredients.
As the hospitality sector continues to grapple with these unprecedented pressures, the closure of The Ollerod stands as a poignant example of the challenges facing businesses across the country. The loss of this award-winning establishment will undoubtedly be felt by the local community and the wider industry, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive support to ensure the survival and prosperity of the sector.
