The introduction of these alerts is part of Instagram’s broader strategy to enhance its safeguarding measures for teenagers. Parents using the platform’s supervision tools will receive notifications via email, text, WhatsApp, or directly through the app, depending on the contact information they have provided to Meta. The intention is to notify parents of unusual search patterns that may indicate a young person’s distress, accompanied by expert resources to assist them in navigating these sensitive discussions.
However, this initiative has drawn criticism from mental health advocates and charities. Andy Burrows, CEO of the Molly Rose Foundation, expressed concern that these alerts might do more harm than good. Founded in memory of Molly Russell, who tragically took her own life in 2017 after being exposed to self-harm content on social media, the foundation cautioned against the potential panic such notifications could instil in parents. Burrows remarked, “Every parent would want to know if their child is struggling, but these flimsy notifications will leave parents panicked and ill-prepared to have the sensitive and difficult conversations that will follow.”

While some charities acknowledge the importance of Instagram’s alert system, they argue it does not address the underlying issues that lead young people to seek out harmful content. Ged Flynn, head of the Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide charity, highlighted that parents are more concerned with preventing their children from being drawn into a harmful online environment than receiving warnings after the fact. He stated, “They don’t want to be warned after their children search for harmful content; they want effective measures in place to ensure their kids are safe online.”

Leanda Barrington-Leach, executive director of the children’s charity 5Rights, echoed these sentiments, urging Meta to rethink its approach by developing systems that prioritise child safety as the default setting. Burrows also referenced previous research indicating that Instagram still recommends harmful content to vulnerable young users, underscoring the need for more comprehensive measures to protect them.
The Bigger Picture of Online Safety
As social media platforms face mounting pressure from governments and advocacy groups, Instagram is not alone in its quest to enhance child safety. Recent developments in Australia have seen the government ban social media usage for under-16s, while countries like Spain, France, and the UK are contemplating similar regulations.
