Burrows’s apprehension reflects a broader unease within the mental health community. They don’t want to be warned after the fact; they want proactive measures that truly protect their children,” he said.

Leanda Barrington-Leach, executive director at the children’s charity 5Rights, urged the company to develop systems that are inherently age-appropriate. She emphasised that the responsibility lies with social media platforms to create safe environments for young users, rather than passing the burden onto parents.

Despite the criticisms, Meta has defended its position, suggesting that the new alerts will be accompanied by expert resources to help parents navigate these challenging discussions. The platform has also indicated that the alerts will be sent through various communication channels, including email, text, and direct messages on Instagram. However, the company has acknowledged that these alerts may sometimes trigger notifications without a significant cause for concern, as they aim to “err on the side of caution.”
