This initiative, which is part of the platform’s existing child supervision tools, marks the first time Meta, Instagram’s parent company, will proactively alert parents about their children’s search behaviours rather than solely blocking harmful content. The new alerts will roll out next week for parents and teens using Instagram Teen Accounts in the UK, US, Australia, and Canada, with plans for a global implementation to follow.
Mixed Reactions from Mental Health Advocates
While the initiative has been welcomed as a step towards greater parental awareness, it has also faced criticism from mental health advocates. The Molly Rose Foundation, established by the family of Molly Russell, who tragically took her own life in 2017 after being exposed to harmful content online, believes that these alerts may do more harm than good. Chief Executive Andy Burrows expressed concerns that such notifications could induce panic among parents without equipping them to handle the sensitive discussions that would ensue.
“Every parent would want to know if their child is struggling,” Burrows stated. “However, these flimsy notifications will leave parents panicked and ill-prepared for the difficult conversations that will follow.”
Expert Opinions on Implementation
Molly Russell’s father, Ian, also voiced his scepticism regarding the alerts. He highlighted the distress that receiving such a notification could provoke, especially when a parent is not adequately prepared to respond. “Imagine being at work and getting a message saying ‘your child is thinking of ending their life’. I don’t know how I’d react,” he said.

Meta has indicated that along with the alerts, parents will receive expert resources to assist them in navigating these challenging conversations. However, sceptics argue that the immediate emotional impact of the alert may overshadow any resources provided.
Ged Flynn, the Chief Executive of Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide, added that while the initiative was a step forward, it fails to address the underlying issues presented by social media. “Parents contact us every day, expressing their concerns about their children online. They need proactive measures rather than reactive alerts,” he explained.
Meta’s Response and Future Developments
In response to the criticism, Meta has defended its approach, insisting that the alerts aim to empower parents and enhance the safety of young users. The new system is built upon existing features that hide and block harmful content related to self-harm and suicide. Alerts will be communicated via email, text, WhatsApp, or through the Instagram app itself, depending on the contact information available.
Sameer Hinduja, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center, acknowledged the potential alarm these notifications may cause but emphasised the importance of the accompanying resources. “What matters is not just the alert itself but the quality and usefulness of the resources parents receive to guide them through what to do next,” he stated.
Looking ahead, Instagram plans to expand these alerts to encompass instances where teens may discuss self-harm and suicide with AI chatbots, acknowledging that young users are increasingly seeking support through these technologies.

The introduction of these alerts comes amid escalating scrutiny of social media companies by governments worldwide, urging them to enhance child safety measures. Earlier this year, Australia implemented a ban on social media access for individuals under 16, with Spain, France, and the UK considering similar regulations.
