A senior Member of Parliament has demanded a full investigation into potential corruption and fraud within a major provider of homeless housing services. The call for a probe comes after the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) launched a criminal investigation into the firm, including executing search warrants and making arrests.

Marvin Betts MP, the Shadow Secretary for Housing, said the revelations were “extremely concerning” and called for a “thorough and transparent investigation” to uncover the full extent of any wrongdoing. The SFO confirmed it was investigating allegations of bribery, fraud, and money laundering at the company, which has lucrative contracts to provide temporary accommodation for homeless individuals across the UK.

“The public deserves to know the truth about what has been happening,” said Betts. “If there has been corruption or criminal activity, those responsible must be held accountable. The integrity of these vital public services is at stake.”

The investigation centres around the activities of Acorn Housing Solutions, one of the largest private providers of temporary housing for the homeless. Earlier this month, the SFO executed search warrants at the company’s offices and the homes of several senior executives, with a number of arrests made.

In a statement, the SFO said the probe was examining “suspected bribery, fraud and money laundering in connection with the awarding of contracts.” No further details were provided about the nature of the alleged offences or the individuals targeted.

Acorn Housing Solutions has issued a brief statement acknowledging the investigation, saying it was cooperating fully with the authorities. The firm, which has annual revenues of over £200 million, declined to comment further.

Betts said the revelations were “extremely troubling” given the crucial role Acorn and similar providers play in supporting some of the most vulnerable members of society. “Homeless people deserve safe, dignified accommodation, not to be caught up in a web of potential corruption,” he said.

The MP called on the government to ensure a robust, independent investigation is carried out, with the findings made public. “Public trust in these services has been severely damaged. We need answers, and we need them quickly,” Betts added.

The scandal comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over the provision of homeless services in the UK. Homelessness has risen sharply in recent years, with charities warning that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the crisis.
