An inquiry into claims of ‘family voting’ during the recent Gorton and Denton by-election has concluded with no evidence of misconduct. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have dismissed allegations of voter coercion, following a thorough investigation prompted by concerns raised by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.
No Evidence Found
The allegations emerged in the wake of the by-election held on 26 February, where Hannah Spencer from the Green Party clinched victory in what has traditionally been a Labour stronghold. Farage reported his concerns to the police and the Electoral Commission, asserting that there were incidents of family members influencing others’ votes—known as ‘family voting.’ However, GMP’s findings have ruled out any intent to sway voters, stating there was “no evidence to suggest any influence or restraint” on voters, as outlined in the Ballot Secrecy Act 2023.
Farage dismissed GMP’s closure of the investigation as an “establishment whitewash,” insisting that more robust oversight is necessary. He remarked, “This isn’t good enough. We need proper oversight, real accountability, and the courage to admit when something isn’t right, not another brushed-under-the-carpet report from the usual suspects.”
Observer Accounts Under Scrutiny
The inquiry followed reports from independent observers, Democracy Volunteers, who claimed to witness high instances of suspected family voting. However, the Green Party swiftly rebuffed these claims, suggesting they were a tactic by Reform UK to undermine a legitimate election result. A party spokesperson labelled Farage’s allegations as a “petulant refusal to accept a clear outcome.”
Democracy Volunteers maintained that their observations were made in good faith by trained and impartial personnel, though GMP noted the lack of concrete evidence to support claims of misconduct. The police interviewed officials at all 45 polling stations, with only four observers from Democracy Volunteers reporting suspected incidents. The observers indicated that they saw multiple individuals entering booths together and people peering over voter’s shoulders, yet they could not provide descriptions or specific timings of misconduct.
Conclusion of Investigation
Returning Officer Tom Stannard welcomed the police’s findings, asserting the integrity of the by-election remained intact. He highlighted that the allegations were made public only moments after the polls closed, and observers failed to raise their concerns with polling staff immediately. “If observers had concerns, they should have raised them with polling station staff immediately. It is unfortunate that did not happen in this case,” he stated.
Green Party leader Zack Polanski also voiced strong disapproval of the allegations, labelling them as unfounded and even Islamophobic, arguing that they stemmed from fears that the Green Party could disrupt the status quo in Britain.
Robust Electoral Integrity Measures
The Electoral Commission has reinforced its commitment to ensuring elections are secure and trustworthy. Chief Executive Vijay Rangarajan emphasised that while allegations of fraud are taken seriously, they must be substantiated with evidence to maintain public confidence in electoral processes. The Commission is currently updating its code of practice for electoral observers to ensure any concerns are raised appropriately and grounded in fact.
A spokesperson for Democracy Volunteers emphasised their commitment to transparency, stating they employed a rigorous methodology aligned with international observation standards in compiling their report.
Why it Matters
The resolution of this investigation is pivotal, not only for the integrity of the Gorton and Denton by-election but also for public trust in the electoral system as a whole. Allegations of voting irregularities can significantly impact voter confidence and the perceived legitimacy of election outcomes. As political tensions heighten, ensuring the integrity of the voting process remains crucial for democracy in the UK, making it imperative that all claims are thoroughly investigated and resolved transparently.
