A woman has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of her partner, whose remains were discovered buried in a garden nearly 15 years after she was reported missing. Anna Podedworna, aged 40, was convicted by a jury at Derby Crown Court, revealing a harrowing case that has shocked the local community.

A Gruesome Discovery

In May 2025, Anna Podedworna contacted Derbyshire Police, informing them that the body of her partner, Izabela Zablocka, could be found buried in the back garden of a property on Princes Street in Derby. Authorities acted on this tip and unearthed the remains, leading to Podedworna’s arrest. The tragic case dates back to September 4, 2010, the day when 10-year-old Kasia Zablocka was left without her mother, who failed to call as expected on her birthday.

During the trial, evidence presented revealed that Podedworna, described as a “skilled butcher,” had murdered Izabela in a violent and manipulative act. Despite her initial denial of the charges, the jury found her guilty of murder, culminating in her life sentence with a minimum term of 21 years.

The Impact on Family

Mrs Justice Williams KC, who presided over the case, spoke poignantly about the profound effect of Izabela’s disappearance on her family. “It is clear from the evidence in this trial that Izabela was a loved family member, who enjoyed a close bond with her mother, grandmother, and her daughter Kasia,” she stated during the sentencing. The judge emphasised that the absence of Izabela left a significant void in the lives of her loved ones, particularly for her daughter, who grew up unaware of her mother’s fate.

The judge further noted the persistence of Izabela’s family, who tirelessly sought the truth about her disappearance. Had they not continued to push for answers, the details of this horrific crime might have remained hidden indefinitely.

A Lack of Remorse

In her ruling, Mrs Justice Williams expressed disappointment over Podedworna’s lack of remorse, highlighting that her decision to contact the police was not a genuine attempt to come forward but rather an effort to craft a misleading narrative about Izabela’s death. “You have shown no remorse. You do not deserve credit for belatedly contacting the police… you only did this to put forward a false account of Izabela’s death,” the judge remarked.

The case has sparked discussions around domestic violence and the importance of addressing such issues within communities. The tragic loss of Izabela Zablocka serves as a stark reminder of the potential for hidden violence in domestic relationships.

Why it Matters

This case underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and support for victims of domestic violence. The heartbreaking story of Izabela Zablocka reveals not only the devastating consequences of such acts but also the crucial role that family and community support play in seeking justice. As society grapples with these issues, it is vital that we continue to engage in conversations about safety, accountability, and the importance of listening to those who may be suffering in silence.
