Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is often described as one of the most excruciating medical conditions known, and for individuals like Gerwyn Tumelty, 52, it has drastically altered their lives. The intense pain, likened to having a screwdriver inserted into the face, can strike unexpectedly, affecting daily activities and mental health. This condition, which affects roughly eight in every 100,000 people annually in the UK, is frequently misdiagnosed, leading to prolonged suffering for many, including the father of three from Swansea.

The Harrowing Experience of Living with TN

Gerwyn Tumelty recalls the anguish that defined his life from 2017 onwards. The pain, triggered by simple actions such as eating or even a gentle breeze, forced him to leave meals abruptly, leaving his children bewildered. “I had sharp pains in the jaw, like electric shocks,” he explained, reflecting on his struggle with TN. The condition stems from the compression of the trigeminal nerve, which transmits sensations from the face to the brain, and can be exacerbated by everyday activities.

His journey to finding relief was fraught with despair. Thoughts of no longer being present for his family haunted him, yet he fought to stay strong, motivated by the impact his absence would have on his loved ones. “What kept me going was that I couldn’t imagine what effect that would have on my family,” he shared.

The Path to Diagnosis and Treatment

The journey to a proper diagnosis can be extensive, as evidenced by the experiences of both Gerwyn and Aneeta Prem, another TN sufferer. Aneeta faced a seven-year struggle before receiving her diagnosis of bilateral TN, a rare variant where pain can occur on both sides of the face. Her initial symptoms were dismissed as dental issues, leading to unnecessary procedures. “I initially thought it was toothache and had a wisdom tooth removed,” she lamented.

Once diagnosed, Gerwyn underwent neurosurgery in 2019, a procedure designed to alleviate pressure on the trigeminal nerve but not without risks. While surgery can provide long-term relief, complications such as facial numbness and hearing loss are possible. Fortunately, Gerwyn experienced a remarkable recovery, allowing him to regain control over his life. He has since embraced a healthier lifestyle, taking on challenges such as completing the London Marathon and committing to daily ice baths to bolster his mental resilience.

The Importance of Awareness and Support

The Trigeminal Neuralgia Association UK highlights the critical need for awareness and timely diagnosis within healthcare settings. Aneeta, now the chief executive of the association, emphasises the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. She advocates for better education among healthcare providers to ensure that patients receive appropriate care without enduring unnecessary delays in diagnosis.

Despite progress, the association reports alarming statistics: 33% of TN sufferers contemplate suicide, yet many never seek help. “People have extreme pains but almost feel ashamed to talk about the pain and how it makes them feel,” Aneeta noted. This isolation can exacerbate mental health issues, making community support networks essential.

Why it Matters

The experiences of Gerwyn Tumelty and Aneeta Prem serve as a poignant reminder of the profound impact that conditions like trigeminal neuralgia can have on individuals and their families. Raising awareness and fostering open discussions about such invisible illnesses can help alleviate the stigma surrounding chronic pain. By prioritising education and support, we can ensure that those affected receive the care they desperately need, ultimately saving lives and improving the quality of life for countless individuals grappling with this debilitating condition.
