A recent investigation has revealed a disturbing case of fraudulent practices carried out by a locksmith company, leading to significant financial distress for an elderly couple. What began as a straightforward request for assistance ended with the couple facing a staggering bill of over £5,000, exposing the alarming tactics employed by some in the locksmith industry.

The Disturbing Bait-and-Switch Tactics

Maureen and Eric Reynolds, both 85, found themselves locked out of their London home last December after inadvertently closing their front door with the key still in the lock. A relative contacted the first locksmith that appeared in an online search, 24/7 Locksmiths UK, which quoted them £49 for the service. However, the reality of the situation soon took a turn for the worse.

Upon arrival, the locksmith claimed he did not possess the necessary tools to retrieve the key and instead insisted on drilling the lock. “Our grandson was surprised as he thought all locksmiths carried those tools,” Eric recounted. The locksmith proceeded to drill the lock and replace parts, but later asserted that the entire lock mechanism needed replacing, leading to an exorbitant invoice of £2,802.

Hidden Costs and Unnecessary Work

The Reynolds’ ordeal did not end there. Following the locksmith’s damaging work, which left the door frame chipped and in disarray, they had to hire another locksmith to replace the entire door and frame at an additional cost of £2,244. “It was cheaper to replace the whole door than what he charged for the lock,” Maureen stated incredulously.

The investigation by BBC London involved undercover filming, revealing that similar incidents had occurred to numerous victims across London and Essex. The footage captured a locksmith attempting to charge customers up to ten times the original quote, a clear indication of the bait-and-switch scam that has become alarmingly prevalent.

Expert Opinions and Recommendations

To further understand the situation, the BBC engaged Lloyd Morgan from the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) to inspect the lock in question. Morgan demonstrated the ease with which a trained locksmith could bypass the lock without any damage, revealing that several techniques could be employed to open the door efficiently. “An apprentice should be able to do this no problem,” he noted, highlighting the questionable practices of 24/7 Locksmiths UK.

Even when confronted about the price hike, a representative from the company attributed it to “miscommunication,” denying any intention to scam customers. The locksmith mentioned that the cost for drilling the lock was £125 plus VAT, with additional fees for replacing the lock. This resulted in a shocking total of £376.80 for what should have been a simple job.

An Alarmingly Rising Trend

The MLA has reported a significant increase in complaints regarding suspected overcharging, with figures rising from 280 in 2023 to over 400 in the following year. A spokesperson for the association urged consumers to opt for local, approved locksmiths, advising them to keep their contact details handy to avoid falling prey to scams during emergencies.

Why it Matters

This investigation underscores the pressing need for increased vigilance when hiring service providers, particularly in urgent situations. The distressing experiences of couples like the Reynolds serve as a cautionary tale, highlighting the potential for exploitation within the locksmith industry. It is crucial for consumers to remain informed and proactive, ensuring they engage with reputable professionals to safeguard themselves against unscrupulous practices that can lead to severe financial repercussions.
