In a concerning incident in Edinburgh’s city centre, two teenage boys have been charged after reports of individuals carrying bladed weapons. Specialist firearms officers were called to the Rose Street and Hanover Street junction on Friday afternoon, where a young man was seen carrying what appeared to be a large machete, in close proximity to other pedestrians.

The 17-year-old individual has been arrested and is scheduled to appear before the Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday. Additionally, a 15-year-old has been reported to the youth justice authorities. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.

Detective Inspector Alan Sharp has urged anyone who was in the area at the time and has not yet spoken to the police to come forward with any information that could assist the ongoing investigation.

The incident has raised concerns about the presence of weapons in public spaces, particularly involving young people. Authorities have emphasised the importance of addressing this issue and ensuring the safety of the community.

“I would urge anyone who may have been in the area at the time and has not yet spoken to police to get in touch,” said Detective Inspector Sharp.

Police Scotland has confirmed that inquiries into the incident are ongoing, and they are committed to tackling the issue of knife crime and ensuring the safety of the public.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued efforts to address the underlying factors that contribute to such incidents and to promote safe and inclusive communities for all.
