In a significant move to alleviate financial strain on vulnerable families, the UK government has announced an expansion of the WaterSure scheme. Starting this year, an additional 53,000 households on disability benefits will be eligible for assistance with their water bills. This programme aims to cap water costs for those who require higher water usage due to medical conditions or large families.
Expanding Eligibility Criteria
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed that households receiving disability living allowance, attendance allowance, or personal independence payments (PIP) will now qualify if their annual income is below £25,745. This change is set to benefit many families struggling to manage their expenses amidst rising living costs.
Currently, approximately 260,000 households already benefit from the WaterSure scheme, which has helped them save an average of £325 on their annual water bills. By broadening the eligibility criteria, the government aims to provide critical support to those who need it most.
Simplifying the Application Process
One of the notable reforms includes the removal of the requirement for a doctor’s note to apply for the WaterSure scheme. This change is expected to streamline the application process, making it easier for families to access the support they need without unnecessary hurdles.
Furthermore, the way the price cap is determined will be adjusted. Many current recipients may see their savings increase by up to £100, providing further relief in their financial commitments.
Government and Advocacy Group Responses
Water Minister Emma Hardy expressed her commitment to supporting vulnerable households, stating, “Reforming WaterSure will make a meaningful difference to hundreds of thousands of families who need support the most.” She emphasised the importance of these changes as part of a broader strategy to ensure a water system that protects consumers and the environment alike.
Mike Keil, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council for Water (CCW), welcomed the reforms as a positive step forward. He noted, “These improvements will bring peace of mind to tens of thousands more customers whose circumstances mean they have no choice but to use a significant amount of water for essential needs.”
James Taylor, Director of Strategy at disability equality charity Scope, highlighted the financial challenges faced by disabled families, commenting, “Life costs more if you are disabled, and it’s very good news that more disabled families will qualify for discounted water bills.” He pointed out that many disabled families have no alternative but to use large amounts of water for personal care and medical procedures.
