Canada has announced its flag-bearers for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics, with accomplished athletes Mikaël Kingsbury and Marielle Thompson chosen to represent the nation during the opening ceremony. Both seasoned competitors will carry the Maple Leaf at simultaneous events in Livigno, Milan, Cortina, and Predazzo on February 6, as they prepare for their fourth Olympic appearances.
The Journey of Two Champions
Mikaël Kingsbury, hailing from Deux-Montagnes, Quebec, and Marielle Thompson from Whistler, British Columbia, are both 33 years old and share a remarkable journey that began at the Sochi Games in 2014. There, Thompson triumphed with a gold medal, while Kingsbury secured a silver. Reflecting on their shared history, Thompson remarked, “We’ve kind of been going in tandem, it seems like, because we both had our first Olympic Games in Sochi, and then we are the same age as well.”
Kingsbury, one of Canada’s most celebrated athletes, boasts an impressive record that includes an Olympic gold medal in 2018 and silver medals from 2014 and 2022. The anticipation of carrying the flag has left him elated: “I’m going to my fourth Olympic Games. To have that opportunity is beyond my dreams. I’m super, super excited to walk with the flag, with Marielle also. It’s huge.”
Overcoming Adversity
Both athletes have faced significant challenges in the lead-up to the Games. Thompson’s path has been particularly arduous, as she contended with a knee injury and subsequent surgery last year. “Each of my Olympic experiences has been so drastically different,” she shared, reflecting on her evolution from a 21-year-old champion to an athlete who has battled injuries. “This injury… has been a lot more difficult than I’ve experienced before, so I’ve had to really push myself. To be the flag-bearer is kind of the cherry on top of the cake. I’m just starting to feel like I’m back in my own again with my skiing.”
Kingsbury, too, has navigated a difficult season due to a groin injury that limited his training. However, he recently celebrated a milestone by claiming his 100th World Cup victory in Val Saint-Côme, Quebec. “Right now, I’m skiing without any pain,” he said, expressing relief and optimism as he trains for the upcoming events. “It’s good to see the light at the end of the tunnel. My sport is super fun when you’re healthy, but when you’re hurt, it’s not very fun to take all these impacts from the bumps and the jumps.”
A Historic Olympic Experience
The 2026 Winter Olympics will see dual moguls make its Olympic debut in Livigno, alongside traditional moguls events. Kingsbury is a five-time world champion in dual moguls, and both athletes are gearing up for their competitions, with men’s moguls scheduled for February 12 and dual moguls on February 15; women’s ski cross will take place on February 20.
As they prepare for the Games, Thompson is also campaigning for a position on the International Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission, showcasing her commitment to the sport beyond her competitive career.
Why it Matters
The selection of Kingsbury and Thompson as Canada’s flag-bearers is not merely a ceremonial honour; it embodies the resilience and spirit of Canadian athletes who continually rise above challenges to represent their country on the world stage. Their stories of perseverance serve as inspiration, resonating with aspiring athletes and fans alike. As they carry the Maple Leaf, they not only represent their individual journeys but also reflect the collective spirit of Canadian sportsmanship.
