South Africa’s townships have long faced challenges in accessing efficient delivery services, but one innovative start-up is aiming to change that. Talifhani Banks, a young entrepreneur, has developed a cutting-edge logistics platform that is bringing the convenience of technology to smaller businesses across the country’s urban centres.
Banks’ company, Deliver-E, has created a mobile app and web-based system that allows township-based retailers, wholesalers, and service providers to seamlessly manage their deliveries. Using GPS tracking, real-time updates, and a network of vetted drivers, Deliver-E ensures swift and reliable transport of goods, a critical element for businesses operating in areas that have historically been underserved by traditional logistics firms.
“The townships are vibrant hubs of economic activity, but they’ve often been overlooked by larger delivery companies,” explains Banks. “We saw an opportunity to empower these small and medium-sized enterprises by giving them access to the same kind of technology-driven solutions that bigger firms enjoy.”
Deliver-E’s platform has already gained traction, with over 2,000 registered users across Gauteng, the Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. The start-up has secured $3.2 million in seed funding from a consortium of local and international investors, allowing it to rapidly expand its services and driver network.
“What sets us apart is our deep understanding of the township landscape,” says Banks. “We’ve tailored our systems to the unique needs of these businesses, whether it’s accommodating cash-on-delivery payments or navigating the complex road networks.”
The impact of Deliver-E’s services has been significant. Retailers report faster delivery times, reduced costs, and improved customer satisfaction, while wholesalers have been able to reach a broader customer base. The start-up has also created employment opportunities for hundreds of drivers, many of whom are from the townships themselves.
“This is more than just a logistics company,” says Banks. “We’re empowering entrepreneurship and economic development in some of South Africa’s most vibrant communities. By bringing technology to the townships, we’re helping to level the playing field and unlock new avenues for growth.”
As Deliver-E continues to scale, Banks is confident that the start-up’s innovative approach will inspire others to explore similar solutions. “The townships are full of untapped potential,” he says. “With the right tools and support, these businesses can thrive and contribute to a more inclusive, prosperous future for South Africa.”
