In a remarkable feat of engineering, the Bromford Viaduct in Birmingham has emerged as the longest bridge in the United Kingdom, stretching an impressive 3.5 miles without crossing any water. This remarkable structure, forming part of the M6 motorway, has become a landmark feature of the Midlands city.

Construction of the Bromford Viaduct took place between 1965 and 1972, with the primary aim of easing congestion through Birmingham. Starting at Castle Bromwich and extending through to Gravelly Hill, the viaduct follows the River Tame valley, allowing the motorway to bypass the flood-prone region.

While viaducts are technically considered bridges, they are primarily built to connect two points at similar elevations. For much of its length, the Bromford Viaduct runs alongside the River Tame, while also overlooking residential and commercial areas. The structure boasts six lanes altogether, with three running in each direction.

In recent years, this section of the M6 has been converted into a smart motorway, further enhancing its capabilities. Interestingly, the M6 itself holds the title of Britain’s longest motorway, stretching from Catthorpe, junction 19 on the M1, all the way to the Scottish border.

While the Bromford Viaduct may be the UK’s longest bridge, it is not the country’s longest overall. That distinction belongs to the Prince of Wales Bridge, which spans the River Severn and serves as a crucial connection between England and Wales. Measuring 5,128 metres or approximately 3.2 miles in length, the Prince of Wales Bridge was completed in 1996.

Coming in third is Scotland’s Tay Bridge, which transports railway passengers across the Firth of Tay between Dundee and Wormit in Fife. This structure extends 3,286 metres, just over two miles. The Humber Bridge, on the other hand, holds the record as Britain’s longest single-span suspension bridge, linking East Yorkshire with North Lincolnshire.

The Bromford Viaduct’s sheer size and impressive engineering feats have made it a true landmark in the heart of the Midlands, solidifying its status as the UK’s longest bridge.
