British motorists will soon have a powerful new tool at their disposal with the launch of the government’s Fuel Finder programme. This initiative mandates filling stations across the UK to report any changes in fuel prices within a mere 30 minutes, significantly enhancing the ability for drivers to identify the most economical options for petrol and diesel.

Instant Price Updates for Drivers

Starting Monday, all fuel retailers will be required to update their prices promptly following any adjustments. The registration process for forecourts opened in early January, albeit slightly behind schedule. Enforcement measures are set to commence in May.

A Response to Industry Recommendations

The Fuel Finder scheme emerged as a direct response to recommendations from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), following an extensive review of the fuel sector in July 2023. The CMA highlighted the need for clearer and more competitive pricing to empower consumers, and this initiative is a significant stride towards achieving that goal.

Edmund King, President of the AA, expressed optimism about the programme, stating, “For too long, UK drivers have been hostage to the whims of fuel retailers, unaware that a cheaper option could be just around the corner.” The new system aims to level the playing field, allowing fuel stations with lower prices to effectively communicate their competitive rates to drivers.

Simon Williams, Head of Policy at the RAC, welcomed the initiative as a stepping stone towards more affordable fuel prices across the country. “We hope this is just the beginning of a broader effort to enhance consumer choice and drive down prices,” he noted.

This initiative mirrors similar efforts in countries like Austria and France, where consumers have benefitted from greater price visibility and competition.
