In the midst of the ongoing crisis in Gaza, a devastating tragedy has unfolded as a 27-day-old baby named Aisha Ayesh al-Agha has died from severe cold, the eighth child to succumb to hypothermia this winter. This heartbreaking loss is a grim reminder of the dire conditions facing mothers and newborns in the region, as the combined effects of fuel shortages, blocked medical supplies, mass displacement, and relentless bombardment have severely compromised maternal and newborn care.

According to the Palestinian health ministry, the infant was brought to Naser Hospital in Khan Younis, but it was already too late to save her. This tragedy is part of a broader crisis that has seen a staggering 41% drop in birth rates in Gaza since the start of 2025, a statistic that has prompted allegations of reproductive violence.

Recent reports by Physicians for Human Rights, in collaboration with the Global Human Rights Clinic at the University of Chicago Law School and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel, have documented the devastating impact of the conflict on maternal and neonatal health. Between January and June 2025, the reports recorded 2,600 miscarriages, 220 pregnancy-related deaths, 1,460 premature births, over 1,700 underweight newborns, and more than 2,500 infants requiring neonatal intensive care.

Mothers in Gaza are being forced into unthinkable choices, routinely compromising their own health and survival to meet their children’s most basic needs. With maternal and newborn care dismantled by the ongoing crisis, families have been left with no choice but to seek refuge in overcrowded tent encampments, further exacerbating the challenges they face.

The situation remains precarious, with Unicef reporting that more than 100 children have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire came into force in October. While the intensity of airstrikes and gunfire has slowed, they have not ceased, and recent winter storms have compounded the crisis, causing deaths and flooding in the already stretched displacement camps.

As the world grapples with this ongoing humanitarian crisis, the plight of mothers and newborns in Gaza serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating impact of conflict on the most vulnerable members of society. The international community must urgently address the root causes of this crisis and ensure that the people of Gaza have access to the essential resources and medical care they need to protect the lives of mothers and their children.
