In response to alarming statistics indicating that a significant portion of the public is failing to attend scheduled health appointments, NHS leaders are calling on users of the official NHS app to enable alert notifications. This initiative aims to mitigate missed appointments, which account for millions of lost consultation opportunities each year, thereby enhancing healthcare efficiency across the system.
The Scale of the Problem
A recent survey conducted among 2,000 patients across England reveals that 25 per cent have either forgotten their appointments or arrived late. Specifically, 12 per cent of respondents confessed to forgetting entirely, while an additional 11 per cent reported tardiness. This trend has severe implications: NHS England disclosed that in 2025 alone, approximately 16 million GP appointments went unattended. This figure translates to a staggering 4.3 per cent of all scheduled appointments—essentially one in every 23 consultations—equating to an entire day’s worth of missed appointments at every GP practice nationwide each month.
The NHS App as a Solution
Dr Amanda Doyle, the national director for primary care and community services at NHS England, emphasised the importance of managing appointments effectively. “While individuals may have valid reasons for missing their appointments, it is crucial that they inform us if possible, allowing us to offer that slot to another patient,” she stated.
To tackle this issue, NHS officials are promoting the ‘Tap the NHS App’ campaign, which encourages users to enable push notifications. By activating these reminders, patients can receive timely alerts for their upcoming appointments, making it easier to cancel or reschedule if necessary.
The NHS app, which boasts over 40 million registered users, offers various functionalities beyond appointment management. Users can order repeat prescriptions and access their health records, making it a comprehensive tool for managing personal health care.
