Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced a bold initiative to create artificial land in Lake Ontario, aimed at constructing a vast convention centre along Toronto’s scenic waterfront. This proposed project, which could cost several billion pounds, involves the use of millions of tonnes of fill to establish a two-million-square-foot facility, likely situated between Humber Bay Park and Ontario Place.
Expanding Toronto’s Land for Economic Growth
Speaking to the press, Ford clarified that while the proposal has been likened to creating an island, he prefers to characterise it as an extension of the existing landmass. He emphasised the need for a larger venue to attract significant global conventions, stating, “We’re losing out on so many large conventions in the world because we just don’t have the size.”
The Premier affirmed that the plan would go through the same environmental assessments as other major projects, assuring that the necessary protocols would be followed to protect the local environment. “We have a tremendous amount of fill right now, and we need to expand the land,” he added, highlighting his discussions with Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, who he claims has endorsed the idea.
Mayor’s Response and Community Engagement
While Mayor Chow’s office has not directly confirmed her support for the proposal, spokesperson Braman Thillainathan noted that the mayor is open to collaborating with the province to enhance the convention centre and boost the city’s economy. “This could help support our local economy and bring in more customers for Toronto’s small businesses,” Thillainathan stated, underlining the importance of ensuring that any major development aligns with community interests.
However, Chow’s office has yet to receive a formal proposal regarding the convention centre, indicating that thorough discussions and reviews will be essential before any commitment is made.
Opposition Voices Concerns
Criticism has emerged from opposition parties regarding the Premier’s ambitious plans. Interim Liberal leader John Fraser referred to the project as a “fantasy island,” while NDP Leader Marit Stiles lambasted the proposal as a “vanity project” that diverts attention from pressing issues such as high grocery prices and extended emergency room wait times.
Despite the opposition’s reservations, Ford has indicated that he is considering multiple sites for the convention centre, with no extensive feasibility studies currently conducted. Reports suggest that the East Harbour development site and the revitalising Port Lands area are also under consideration, indicating a range of potential locations being evaluated.
A Vision for a World-Class Venue
At various public events, Ford has expressed his ambition for the new convention centre, aiming to create a facility that would be “world-class” and evoke “shock and awe,” similar to Chicago’s renowned McCormick Place Convention Center. He has hinted at a budget running into the billions, further fueling the conversation around this grand vision for Toronto’s waterfront.
As discussions continue, the Premier has also raised the need to find suitable locations for soil excavated from transit projects, suggesting that the initiative could address multiple logistical challenges in the city.
