In a significant move for its UK operations, OpenAI has unveiled plans to establish its first permanent office in London’s King’s Cross, a decision that comes just days after the company decided to pause its ambitious Stargate UK data centre initiative. The new office will accommodate up to 544 employees and marks a clear commitment to expanding OpenAI’s presence in the UK tech landscape.
New Office Set to Open in 2027
The planned office, which is set to launch in 2027, aims to bolster OpenAI’s existing workforce of around 200 in the capital. Currently, the company’s London team is involved in various sectors, including research, engineering, customer support, policy, communications, marketing, and sales. With the new office, OpenAI intends to significantly increase its UK workforce, tapping into the region’s highly skilled talent pool.
Phoebe Thacker, OpenAI’s global head of data research programmes and the site lead for London, expressed enthusiasm about the development. “The UK has an incredible depth of talent and a strong track record in AI,” she stated. Thacker added, “This new office gives us the space to keep building here,” highlighting the firm’s intention to make London its largest research hub outside the United States.
Stargate Project Put on Hold
The announcement of the new office comes on the heels of OpenAI’s decision to halt its Stargate UK project, which was designed to encompass multiple sites, including Cobalt Park near Newcastle and Blyth in Northumberland. The company cited energy costs and regulatory challenges as key factors behind this postponement, stating that it would revisit the project only when the “right conditions” for long-term investment in the UK infrastructure arise.
The Stargate initiative was part of a broader technology agreement between the UK and the US, revealed last September during President Donald Trump’s state visit. While the shelving of the project may raise eyebrows, OpenAI maintains that the establishment of its London office underscores its long-term commitment to the UK market.

King’s Cross has emerged as a prominent tech hub, already home to major players like Google. The Regent’s Quarter site for OpenAI’s new office spans an impressive 88,500 square feet, providing ample space for growth as the demand for artificial intelligence continues to surge across various sectors in the UK.
