In a true display of sartorial elegance, Japanese tennis superstar Naomi Osaka has once again stunned the crowds at the Australian Open with a breathtaking outfit inspired by none other than a jellyfish. The four-time Grand Slam champion made a statement entrance on Rod Laver Arena, showcasing a unique ensemble that paid homage to her young daughter Shai.

Osaka’s ocean blue tie-dye tracksuit jacket, adorned with delicate ruffles, and her wide-leg bottoms with a matching pattern, caught the eye of spectators and commentators alike. As BBC Sport’s tennis correspondent Russell Fuller remarked, “It is the most spectacular and breathtaking entrance to a Grand Slam first round that I have ever seen.”

The 28-year-old revealed that the inspiration for her eye-catching outfit came from a book she was reading to her two-year-old daughter, which featured the mesmerising jellyfish. “Nike let me design this one,” Osaka said. “I’m so grateful I get to be able to do the things that I love. It’s really beautiful.”

The outfit also featured two white butterflies – one on her wide-brimmed hat and one on her umbrella – a nod to the moment when a butterfly landed on her face during her run to the Australian Open title in 2021. Osaka paused play to gently remove the creature and place it on the side of the court, before it flew up and landed on her nose, captivating the audience.

Osaka’s dramatic first-round performance against Croatian world number 65 Antonia Ruzic, who was celebrating her 23rd birthday, only added to the spectacle. The former world number one survived a potential banana skin, having gone 3-4 down in the deciding set, before breaking back and charging through to secure a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory.

As former world number six Chanda Rubin observed, “You feel like even if she had lost, she would’ve owned it [the outfit]. But it felt like the statement wouldn’t have been complete had she not won. At the end of the day, her tennis did the most talking.”

Osaka will now face unseeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the second round at Melbourne Park, as she continues her quest for a third Australian Open title.
