Comedian Paddy McGuinness has opened up about his profound weight loss journey, revealing that his transformation was sparked by a personal low point in his life. The 52-year-old star documented his experience on social media after successfully completing the challenging 75 Hard programme, a rigorous fitness challenge that has gained popularity across social platforms.
A Challenge Like No Other
The 75 Hard programme, created by entrepreneur Andy Frisella, is no walk in the park. Participants are required to adhere to a strict daily routine for 75 consecutive days, which includes two 45-minute workouts—one of which must take place outdoors—drinking 4.5 litres of water each day, following a specific diet, completely avoiding alcohol, and reading ten pages of a non-fiction book daily.
McGuinness, who wrapped up the challenge in January, explained that he initially indulged excessively before starting, saying, “I thought, ‘I’m going to have a real blowout, hit rock bottom’. I don’t recommend it. Just for me personally, I thought, ‘I’ll see if I can get myself out of it’.”
The Joy of Transformation
In an interview with Men’s Health UK, McGuinness expressed his satisfaction with the results, stating, “One of the biggest things is the clarity you feel—reading books every night, being in a routine, and having a good diet.” He noted that his journey serves as inspiration, affirming it’s “nice to show other blokes it’s attainable.”

However, the comedian faced scepticism online. After sharing his transformation photos with his 2.2 million Instagram followers, some accused him of manipulating the before image with artificial intelligence. McGuinness quipped, “A few people went, ‘Clearly you’ve AI’d the first picture’. ‘F****** hell, you’re supposed to AI the after picture, not the before!’ I thought, ‘Jesus, that’s how bad I looked’.”
Celebrating Success and Reflecting on Mental Health
To celebrate completing the challenge, McGuinness indulged in a curry and a milkshake, but he admitted that the experience was less fulfilling than he had anticipated. “I just felt like s***. It actually changed something in my brain, habit-wise,” he shared, highlighting the lasting impact of his fitness journey.
The former Top Gear host also touched on the importance of mental health awareness, particularly concerning male suicide. Having battled clinical depression himself, McGuinness reflected on the tragic loss of friends to suicide, stating, “Knowing a few people who’ve done that makes me really think about my emotions more, because I wouldn’t want to end up in that space where everyone thinks you’re alright and you’re not and then it’s too late.”
