Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is leveraging the influential platform of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast to advocate for tariff-free trade between Canada and the United States. In a recent interview set to air Thursday afternoon, Poilievre aims to engage directly with American audiences, particularly younger listeners, to highlight the mutual benefits of trade agreements for both Canadian and American workers.

Engaging Directly with the American Public

During a press conference in New York City, Poilievre articulated his strategy: “One of the biggest leverage points we have to fight for tariff-free trade, fight for our auto, steel, aluminium, and lumber workers, is the goodwill of the American people.” He underscored that removing tariffs would not only bolster Canadian jobs but also enhance affordability for consumers in the U.S.

The podcast, hosted by Joe Rogan—a prominent figure with over 20 million subscribers on YouTube—has a reputation for attracting a diverse range of guests, from Hollywood celebrities to political figures. Despite Rogan’s past criticisms of the Trump administration, he remains a significant voice within conservative circles, making this appearance particularly strategic for Poilievre as he seeks to broaden his appeal ahead of the upcoming 2025 elections.

A Strategic Shift in Media Engagement

Poilievre’s choice to appear on the Rogan show marks a notable shift from his previous stance; he had declined an invitation to join the podcast last year, a decision that drew criticism. Rogan himself revealed that Poilievre considered the appearance “too problematic.” However, Conservative campaign manager Steve Outhouse noted that this recent engagement reflects a new approach by Poilievre to reach a wider audience. “This was a great opportunity to reach out to audiences on both sides of the border and indeed, around the world,” Outhouse stated in a memo distributed to Conservative MPs and candidates.

The demographics of Rogan’s audience—particularly the 18 to 34 age group—align closely with the Conservative Party’s target base. By participating in the podcast, Poilievre not only aims to convey his economic message but also to connect with younger voters who are often crucial in determining electoral outcomes.

A Personal Touch

In a gesture symbolising goodwill, Poilievre presented Rogan with a kettlebell crafted in Calgary by Black Box Customs, decorated with a maple leaf and inscribed with a quote from the 17th-century Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. This thoughtful gift was intended to remind Rogan of the craftsmanship of Canadian workers every time he trains. “Every time he works out, he’ll think of Canadian workers who did the artisanal craftsmanship on that beautiful piece of equipment,” Poilievre remarked.

The interview was recorded in Rogan’s studio in Austin, Texas, where Poilievre was visiting as part of a broader tour focused on trade discussions and economic matters. Later on Thursday, he is scheduled to deliver a speech to the Foreign Policy Association in New York, further reinforcing his commitment to strengthening Canada-U.S. relations.

Why it Matters

Poilievre’s appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience is more than just an opportunity to promote free trade; it is a calculated move to engage with a vital demographic ahead of a crucial election cycle. By addressing American audiences directly, Poilievre seeks to cultivate goodwill that could translate into support for Canadian interests in trade negotiations. As the political landscape becomes increasingly competitive, strategies that connect with younger voters through popular media platforms will be essential for any party aiming for electoral success.
