In a gripping turn of events, the long-unsolved murder of Izabela Zablocka has been brought to light, thanks to the investigative efforts of Polish journalist Rafal Zalewski. His doorstep interview with Anna Podedworna, the prime suspect, catalysed a series of actions that ultimately revealed the location of Zablocka’s remains. Podedworna, who had been living with the secret of her partner’s death since 2010, was found guilty of murder in Derby this week.

The Investigation Begins

Rafal Zalewski, a reporter for Polsat, one of Poland’s most popular television channels, was initially contacted by Izabela’s daughter, Kasia, who sought answers regarding her mother’s mysterious disappearance. Following her call for help, Zalewski travelled to Derby, where he confronted Podedworna outside her home on Boyer Street for a segment on his programme, *Interwencja*. During this encounter, he sensed something was decidedly off; Podedworna’s nervous demeanour and evasive responses raised alarms.

“From the very beginning, she was the person pointed out by Izabela’s family as someone who might have knowledge about the disappearance,” Zalewski remarked. Despite her denials, he remained convinced that Podedworna was concealing critical information.

The Tipping Point

The pivotal moment came shortly after Zalewski’s interview. Prosecutors believe that the pressure exerted by the encounter compelled Podedworna to confess. On 15 May 2025, she sent an unexpected email to Derbyshire Police, detailing the location of Izabela’s body buried in the garden of a property on Princes Street, Normanton.

Initially bewildered by the email, officers engaged in a series of exchanges with Podedworna, which led her to finally visit Pear Tree police station on 24 May. During this visit, she admitted to having killed Izabela but claimed it was an accident occurring during a violent altercation. The jury, however, found her defence unconvincing.

Zalewski expressed his shock at the revelations, stating, “Now we know how Izabela was treated after her death; it’s something monstrous and macabre.” He highlighted the numerous lies Podedworna had told Izabela’s family, further illustrating the deceit that had persisted for years.

The Trial and Verdict

Zalewski remained closely involved throughout the trial, attending daily proceedings at Derby Crown Court. The case garnered significant attention, not just in the UK but also among the Polish community, as it unfolded. Local residents approached Zalewski frequently, seeking insights into the case and its progression.

After a thorough examination of evidence, Podedworna was found guilty of murder, marking a significant milestone in a case that had haunted Izabela’s family and the community for over a decade. Detective Inspector Kane Martin praised the instrumental roles played by both Kasia and Zalewski, noting that their actions were crucial in prompting Podedworna to reveal the location of Izabela’s remains.

Why it Matters

This case underscores the critical role that journalism can play in uncovering the truth, particularly in instances of violent crime that leave families in anguish. Zalewski’s determination to seek justice not only provided closure for Izabela’s family but also highlighted the ongoing struggle for victims and their loved ones in the face of unsolved cases. The collaboration between journalists and law enforcement can be powerful, demonstrating that persistence and ethical reporting can indeed lead to justice.
