In a significant shift, Pornhub has announced that it will deny access to new users in the UK starting from 2 February 2026. This decision stems from the implementation of mandatory age verification measures introduced last summer under the Online Safety Act (OSA). The popular adult site, along with its sister platforms YouPorn and RedTube, owned by Aylo, will only permit existing users who have already verified their age to continue accessing their accounts.

Age Verification Impacts Traffic

Since the enforcement of the age verification checks, which began in July 2025, Pornhub has reported a staggering 77% decrease in UK traffic. This drastic decline has prompted the company to reassess its involvement in the system put forth by the OSA. Alex Kekesi, Vice-President of Brand and Community at Aylo, expressed concerns regarding the effectiveness of the regulations, stating, “Our sites, which host legal and regulated porn, will no longer be available in the UK to new users, but thousands of irresponsible porn sites will still be easy to access.”

Kekesi further highlighted that the current framework may inadvertently push users towards unregulated websites, increasing potential risks associated with privacy and data security.

The Shift Towards Unregulated Sites

According to Kekesi, the existing age verification requirements have created a climate where users are increasingly turning to sites that lack proper moderation and uploader verification mechanisms. This shift raises alarms about the rising exposure to potentially dangerous or illegal content.

Statistics from web traffic analysis firm SimilarWeb indicate that while Pornhub remains the most visited adult site in the UK, the number of visitors fell to 9.8 million in August 2025, a drop of 1.5 million compared to the same period in 2024. The trend has continued to decline, suggesting that the age verification measures may not only be affecting traffic but also driving users to less secure corners of the internet.

Regulatory Response and Industry Compliance

Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, has positioned itself firmly behind the age verification mandates, stating that pornography services must choose between implementing effective age checks or blocking UK access altogether. A spokesperson for Ofcom noted that 68 of the top 100 adult services in the UK have already adopted age verification protocols, reflecting a significant compliance rate.

To date, Ofcom has initiated investigations into over 80 pornographic websites for non-compliance and has imposed fines, including a notable £1 million penalty on one provider. They remain committed to dialogues with Aylo to comprehend the implications of their recent decision.

Why it Matters

The ramifications of Pornhub’s decision to restrict access to new UK users underscore the ongoing tension between regulatory compliance and user accessibility in the adult content industry. As age verification measures seek to protect children from explicit content, the unintended consequence may be a rise in traffic towards unregulated sites, potentially exposing users to harmful material. This situation highlights the crucial need for effective technological solutions that balance safety with user rights, ensuring that those seeking adult content can do so in a secure and responsible manner.
