A powerful storm system named Ingrid has brought heavy rain and strong winds to parts of south-west England, leading to flood warnings and disruption to rail services.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain across Devon and Cornwall, which is in effect until 10pm GMT today. Forecasters have warned of potential flooding and travel disruptions due to the severe weather.

The Environment Agency has put flood warnings in place along the south Devon and south Cornwall coastlines. In Dawlish, a seaside town in Devon, Network Rail has issued its highest “black alert” warning as 12-foot waves battered the sea wall, causing significant debris to be thrown onto the railway tracks.

Great Western Railway (GWR) has been forced to suspend services between Exeter St Davids and Plymouth until at least 2pm, as the debris needs to be cleared before trains can run safely. Additional rail cancellations have also been reported between Par and Newquay, and Liskeard and Looe, due to flooding.

James Davis, a GWR spokesman, said: “There’s been a significant amount of debris that the sea has thrown onto the track that will need to be cleared before we can run trains safely.” He advised passengers to avoid rail travel until later, with tickets remaining valid on Sunday.

In Exeter, a tree fell down in Heavitree Park during the high winds. Cornwall Council also warned that trees may still be weak or unstable following the recent Storm Goretti, which could pose further risks.

The severe weather conditions are expected to continue throughout the day, with the Met Office warning of potential disruption to transport and the possibility of flooding in some areas. Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay vigilant and follow the guidance of local authorities.
