In a surprising revelation, sources have claimed that FBI Director Kash Patel prioritised attending Premier League football matches over meetings with international allies, including the UK’s MI5 director. This alleged behaviour has raised concerns about Patel’s leadership and commitment to his role.
According to a senior FBI executive who spoke to The New York Times, Patel was reportedly “unhappy” about attending office-based meetings during a secret Five Eyes Conference in May, which brings together intelligence services from the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. Instead, the source said Patel “wanted social events” such as “Premier soccer games” and “jet skiing”.
The executive expressed disbelief at Patel’s reported requests, asking, “Is he really going to ask the MI5 director to go jet skiing instead of meeting? The schedule is set, and every Five Eyes partner is doing this. They can’t just say that he’s not participating and instead he wants to go to a Premier soccer game. This is a job, guys.”
Patel, who appears to be a fan of reigning Premier League champions Liverpool FC, has previously worn a club tie to a US Senate hearing and tweeted about his support for the team. However, this alleged preference for sporting events over official duties has raised concerns about his suitability for the role of FBI Director.
The White House has denied the claims, describing them as a “regurgitation of fake narratives” and “speculation from anonymous sources”. In a statement, the FBI also dismissed the story as a “regurgitation of fake narratives, conjecture and speculation from anonymous sources who are disconnected from reality”.
However, the report also includes accusations that Patel’s first year leading the FBI has resulted in sweeping changes that have allegedly made the United States less safe. This includes claims that Patel prioritised planning social media posts for himself, former deputy Dan Bongino and the Salt Lake City field office in the moments after right-wing activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated, rather than focusing on the situation at hand.
As the FBI Director, Patel is expected to prioritise national security and work closely with international partners to address pressing issues. The allegations surrounding his reported preference for Premier League matches over official meetings have raised questions about his commitment to these responsibilities.
