In a closely contested Democratic primary for a northern New Jersey House seat, progressive candidate Analilia Mejia has secured a slender advantage over former congressman Tom Malinowski, as the vote count continues to unfold. The election was called following the resignation of Democrat Mikie Sherrill, who transitioned to the governorship last year, prompting a competitive race among eleven hopefuls vying for her position.
A Surprising Turn of Events
The special primary held on Thursday in New Jersey’s 11th congressional district initially saw Malinowski, who represented a neighbouring district from 2019 to 2022, claim an early lead. Following the election, Democratic National Committee chair Ken Martin publicly congratulated him on his progress. However, as ballots were meticulously counted, Mejia, a recognised progressive activist and former political director for Bernie Sanders, began to eclipse Malinowski’s early numbers.
As of Friday morning, Mejia led Malinowski by 488 votes, with over 61,000 ballots counted. While the Associated Press has yet to declare a winner, Mejia opted to refrain from premature celebrations, stating at a press conference, “I do think that we have emerged victorious, but I want to first make sure that every voter’s voice is heard.”

Malinowski’s campaign has not been without its challenges. Despite receiving an endorsement from Senator Andy Kim, he faced a barrage of over $2.3 million in negative advertisements funded by the United Democracy Project, a Super PAC linked to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). This group opposed him due to his stance on conditioning aid to Israel, which they deemed contrary to pro-Israel sentiments.
In a response to the tough campaign climate, Malinowski, who has a background as a diplomat and human rights advocate, defended his position, noting, “What AIPAC seems to be demanding is just blind, blank check support for the current [Israeli] prime minister. I don’t think that’s what most pro-Israel Jewish Americans want. I don’t think it’s what most Israelis want.”
